Cathedral and Roncalli to Resume Football Rivalry

Joint release from Cathedral and Roncalli High Schools Roncalli and Cathedral High Schools announced today that the two schools will resume their football rivalry in the fall of 2023. Roncalli will host the first matchup on October 6, 2023, with Cathedral serving as the host school the following season. Top-ranked Cathedral defeated Castle, 32-7, on the road Friday night to win the Class 5-A southern semi-state and advance to the high school football state finals at Lucas Oil Stadium next Saturday (7:00 pm).  The Irish (12-1) will face Zionsville (7-5) in the title game.  The 11th-rated Eagles defeated third-ranked and previously unbeaten Valparaiso, 27-9, in the 5-A northern semi-state. In a matchup of top-rated and undefeated high school football teams Friday night, Cathedral lost in the closing seconds, 17-13, at Center Grove.  The Class 5A top-ranked Fighting Irish now enter the post-season with an 8-1 record, while the Class 6-A number-one Trojans improve to 9-0. Indianapolis Cathedral remained unbeaten in high school football Friday night with a 36-14 win over Cincinnati Elder at Arlington Middle School.  The Panthers had previously beaten the Irish five straight times since a 13-6 Irish win in the inaugural meeting between the two schools in 1930.
