Season Review: Wrestling
 on March 03, 2021

The season happened, and Irish wrestling took full advantage of the opportunity. That meant an impressive performance at the state meet – despite difficult circumstances and plenty of obstacles – and Cathedral High School wrestling coach Sean McGinley said that made the 2020-2021 season memorable. “We were fortunate to have a season, and that made it a successful season,” McGinley said. Junior Zeke Seltzer won a second state title in as many years, and five other Irish wrestlers turned in strong performances for a fifth-p...

Season Preview: Wrestling
 on December 14, 2020

The potential is there, as usual. And while that’s pretty much all that’s normal about this season, Cathedral High School wrestling coach Sean McGinley said he feels good about the perennially strong program entering 2020-2021. The Irish – who have won the last three Indiana High School Athletic Association state titles – yet again have a strong team that can compete in the postseason. But McGinley said the key for the Irish – and for every wrestling team in Indiana – may be navigating the season through winter m...

Season Review: Wrestling
 on March 06, 2020

They focused on the present. Always. Because they did, and largely because of a memorable Saturday morning, the 2019-2020 Cathedral High School wrestling team made history. Sophomore Zeke Seltzer and senior Holden Parsons won individual state titles, and clutch performances by multiple wrestlers helped the Irish win the 2020 Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on February 22, 2020. It was the Irish’s third consecutive state title and fourth in six years, and Irish coach Sean McGinley said fo...

Midseason Review: Wrestling
 on January 16, 2020

They’re deep and they’re strong. As longtime Cathedral High School wrestling coach Sean McGinley will tell you, that guarantees nothing. But it gives the Irish a chance for another special season. “We have some guys who have grown tremendously, and who have gotten better throughout the year,” McGinley said recently. The Irish, a perennial state power that has won three Indiana High School Athletic Association state titles in the past six seasons, are positioned for postseason success again in 2019-20. McGinley called this...

 on February 26, 2019

This one was as hard-earned and as it was dramatic. However it happened, the Cathedral Irish are Indiana state wrestling champions again. Junior Elliott Rodgers and senior Jordan Slivka won individual state titles, and the Irish won the Indiana High School Athletic Association state team title over a competitive, tightly-bunched field at Bankers Life Field House in downtown Indianapolis on February 15-16. “This year might even have topped last year,” Irish wrestling coach Sean McGinley said. “I didn’t know how we could to...

Season Preview - Wrestling
 on December 07, 2018

Hopes are high, and Sean McGinley is fine with that. Cathedral High School wrestling is accustomed to expectations, and McGinley said it’s OK that they are high – very high – entering the 2018-2019 season. That’s Irish wrestling’s standard these days. And McGinley said the Irish welcome the chance to live up to that standard. “The guys that are coming back – these guys have had multiple years of success,” McGinley, in his 19 th season as the Irish’s wrestling coach, said recently. “The ...

Wrestling - Season Wrap Up
BY: Ray Sup on March 01, 2018

Time and again, they did what they needed to do. As a result, the Cathedral High School Irish are Indiana state wrestling champions for a second time in five seasons. The Irish – one of Indiana’s deepest and strongest teams throughout the 2017-2018 season – turned that depth and strength into a postseason run that ended with a victory in the 2018 Indiana High School Athletic Association State Meet at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on February 17. “The only way we thought we could win was a total team effort,&rd...
