Undefeated Bishop Chatard took advantage of three Cathedral turnovers Friday night to defeat the Irish 17-14 at Arsenal Tech’s Howard Longshore Stadium. It’s the first win in the series for the Trojans since 2012 as Cathedral entered the game having won 12 of the last 13 meetings between the rival schools.
Playing in a heavy rain, Cathedral scored first when Bo Sanders returned a first-quarter punt 69 yards for a touchdown. Chatard answered in the second quarter on Mark Nondorf’s 73-yard scoring pass to Jake Kassenbrock. The Trojans then recovered a fumble at the Irish 25-yard-line. Seven plays later, a 34-yard Ben Schrage field goal gave Chatard a 10-7 lead.
Cathedral regained the lead late in the third quarter on Orin Edwards’ 68-yard scoring pass to Haven Montefalco. On the next Irish possession, Chatard’s Pat Mastrian intercepted Edwards for the second time in the game, giving his team the ball at the Cathedral 33-yard-line.
Nondorf immediately completed a 32-yard pass to Schrage at the one-yard-line. Daylen Taylor plowed into the end zone on the following play to put Chatard on top with 10:29 remaining. Cathedral’s final drive ended on downs at the Trojans’ 35-yard-line in the closing seconds.
Edwards completed 12 of 26 passes for 193 yards, while Nondorf completed 13 of 22 passes for 173 yards. Montefalco was the leading receiver with 103 yards on four receptions. Kassenbrock caught four passes totaling 102 yards.
Cathedral still leads the all-time series 25-19. The Irish fall to 1-3 on the season, having lost fourth-quarter leads in each of their last three outings. Cathedral hosts Cincinnati St. Xavier next Friday at Key Stadium on the University of Indianapolis campus. The Irish have only defeated the Bombers once in 17 previous meetings. St. X is 2-1 this season, suffering a 14-12 loss to nationally-ranked Colerain.
