Cathedral opened its 100th high school football season Friday night with a 31-7 victory against Noblesville in the Horseshoe Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Irish jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter on the way to giving Bill Peebles a win in his first game as Cathedral’s head coach.
Junior quarterback Orin Edwards started the Irish scoring when he connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Evan Dawn with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Junior linebacker Quinton Cannon then intercepted a Noblesville pass and returned it to the Millers’ 27-yard-line. Three plays later, sophomore running back Jake Langdon scored on a six-yard run to make the score 14-0. Junior Christian Alerding booted a 27-yard field goal early in the second quarter to add to the lead.
On the next drive, senior running back Chon’Dre Cissell ran 42 yards for a score to give Cathedral a 24-0 lead midway through the second period. Noblesville quarterback Grant Gremel tossed a 59-yard scoring pass to Luke Blevins before the half ended for the only Millers’ points of the game.
Edwards concluded the scoring when he found senior receiver Bo Sanders on a 40-yard TD pass one minute into the final quarter.
Edwards completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards in his debut as Cathedral’s starting quarterback. It was the first 200-yard Irish passing performance since Quincy Keller threw for 215 yards in a 2016 sectional championship win over Lawrence Central. Sanders caught eight passes for 103 yards, while Cissell led the Cathedral ground game with 88 yards rushing. The Irish defense held Noblesville to just 26 yards on the ground and 185 yards of total offense.
Cathedral travels to Brownsburg next Friday. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 44-13 win at Bloomington South. The Irish have previously played Brownsburg four times in the state tournament, all Cathedral wins, but the two schools have never faced each other in the regular season.
