Cathedral jumped out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Irish defeated Larry A. Ryle High School from Union, Kentucky in football Friday, 42-20, on homecoming and senior night at Arsenal Tech’s Howard Longshore Stadium. The Irish offense amassed 473 total yards, while the defense held the Raiders to just 139 yards.
Cathedral took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in six plays concluding with Orin Edwards’ 33-yard scoring pass to Bo Sanders. Ryle tied the score 7-7 when Jon Coker returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. However, a Chon’Dre Cissell one-yard scoring run and an Edwards’ 14-yard TD pass to Sanders gave the Irish a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Ryle scored ten unanswered points in the second quarter to pull within 21-17 before Sanders took an Edwards’ shuffle pass eight yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the half to put Cathedral ahead 28-17 at the intermission. Raiders’ kicker Mason Molique booted a 43-yard field goal on Ryle’s first possession of the second half to narrow the gap to 28-20.
Edwards’ put the game away when he connected with Evan Dawn on a 30-yard scoring pass in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Cissell added a 32-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for the final margin. The Irish defense allowed Ryle just 23 yards of offense in the final period.
Edwards finished the game completing 18 of 30 passes for 268 yards. In the last two games, he has thrown for 568 yards and eight touchdowns. Sanders caught 10 passes for 105 yards. Cissell rushed 19 times for 100 yards. The performance was his ninth of 100 or more rushing yards in his 31-game career.
Cathedral defeated Ryle last season 23-17 in the only previous meeting between the two schools. The Raiders return home with a record of 1-5. The Irish are now 4-3 on the season having won their last three games. Cathedral travels to suburban Cleveland, Ohio next Saturday to face Lakewood St. Edward.
The Eagles have won three straight games after losing their first two outings. The losses came against undefeated Mentor High School and unbeaten Detroit Cass Tech. Last week, the Associated Press ranked Mentor second in Ohio’s Division I and Cass Tech first in Michigan’s Division I with D-I being the largest class in both states.
