Indianapolis Cathedral scored 28 second-half points Friday night to come from behind and deal rival Bishop Chatard its first loss of the high school football season 31-21. The victory returns the Northside K of C traveling trophy to Cathedral after the Trojans possessed it for the last year. The Class 5-A second-ranked Fighting Irish improve their season mark to 3-1, while Class 3-A top-rated Chatard falls to 3-1.
Cathedral took the opening kickoff and marched 55 yards to set up a 29-yard Christian Alerding field goal. Chatard answered early in the second quarter when Andrew Sowinski completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Kyle Cheek on a fake end around. The score remained 7-3 at the half.
Irish linebacker Danny Brady pounced on a Trojan fumble on the first play of the second half to give Cathedral the ball on the Chatard 24-yard line. Daylen Hall scored on the next play to put Cathedral in the lead 10-7. The Irish then recovered the ensuing onside kick. Six plays later, Jake Langdon scored on a 9-yard run to make margin 17-7.
Chatard narrowed the deficit when Cheek scored on a 1-yd run. The Trojans regained the lead, 21-17, when Cheek connected with Thomas Coleman for a 29-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Cathedral quarterback Orin Edwards completed an 88-yard pass to Camden Jordan to put the Irish ahead for good. After Shiloh Means intercepted a Cheek pass, Edwards ran 73 yards for another touchdown to provide the final margin of victory.
Entering the night, Chatard had committed just one turnover in three games. Cathedral’s defense finished the game with three takeaways that led to 14 Irish points. Edwards was Cathedral’s leading rusher for a second straight outing, gaining 94 yards on 15 attempts. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 226 yards. Jordan caught four passes for 109 yards.
Cathedral now has a record of 26-19 all-time against Chatard. The Fighting Irish travel to Cincinnati next Friday for the third time in three weeks to face an opponent from the Greater Catholic League South. Following a win against Archbishop Moeller and a loss to Elder, Cathedral will face St. Xavier. The Irish broke a 15-game losing streak against the Bombers last year with a 20-14 overtime win. St. X has a 3-0 record this season, including wins over Brownsburg and Penn from Indiana.
