Cathedral’s David Perry returned the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown Friday night to set the tone in a 56-0 homecoming football win over Jeffersonville High School. The Fighting Irish scored on every possession in the first half and did not punt in the game as they improved their record to 4-2 this season. The Red Devils dropped to 1-5 overall.
Following Perry’s kick return score, Cathedral blocked a punt to set up an Orin Edwards’ 31-yard touchdown pass to Camden Jordan. Edwards added a 12-yard scoring pass to Perry on the next Irish possession. Cathedral’s Farrell Henderson then intercepted a Jeffersonville pass, but fumbled the ball. Teammate Jayden Scruggs picked it up and ran 14 yards for an Irish defensive touchdown. An Edwards to Perry 11-yard TD pass concluded the first quarter scoring with Cathedral on top 35-0.
Jake Langdon scored three times in the second quarter on runs of 33 and 10 yards and on a 39-yard pass from Nathan McCahill to give the Fighting Irish a 56-0 halftime lead. Under the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s “Mercy Rule,” the officials instituted a running clock in the second half during which neither team scored.
Cathedral’s defense limited Jeffersonville to just 65 total yards in the game. Langdon led the Irish offense with 106 yards on nine rushing attempts for his first career 100-plus yard performance. Cathedral is now 4-0 all-time against Jeffersonville dating back to their first meeting in 1927.
The Fighting Irish host Louisville Trinity next Friday at Arlington Middle School. The Shamrocks are 5-1 this season and ranked second by the Associated Press in Kentucky’s Class 6-A. Their only loss came in double overtime to Louisville Male, 20-17, two weeks ago. Last week, the Rocks were ranked 10th in USA Today’s 14-state Midwest regional poll. The Irish are 0-4 against Trinity having played last in 2014.
