Indianapolis Cathedral remained unbeaten in high school football Friday night with a 36-14 win over Cincinnati Elder at Arlington Middle School. The Panthers had previously beaten the Irish five straight times since a 13-6 Irish win in the inaugural meeting between the two schools in 1930.
Cathedral took a 15-0 lead on two Nathan McCahill touchdown runs, one from one yard and the other from 17 yards. McCahill also ran for a 2-point conversion. Elder’s Drew Ramsey scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. McCahill’s 2-yard scoring pass to Camden Jordan in the closing moments of the first half put the Irish ahead 22-6 at the intermission.
Jordan scored again in the third quarter when he made an acrobatic catch on McCahill’s 37-yard TD strike. After an Elder safety, Cathedral’s Seth Mencer scored on a 3-yard run and Ramsey caught an 11-yard Ben Hambleton touchdown pass for the final margin.
McCahill completed 16 of 24 passes for 218 yards. In doing so, he became the tenth quarterback in school history to throw 20 or more touchdown passes in a season and the eleventh Irish player to pass for more than 2,000 career yards. Jordan caught a career-high nine passes for 138 yards, while Jake Langdon rushed for a career-best 155 yards on 16 attempts.
Elder entered the game averaging 38 points and 422 yards per contest on offense. The Cathedral defense held the Panthers to just 145 yards of total offense and only 37 yards rushing. The Irish have held their last five opponents to less than 100 yards on the ground.
Cathedral, now 7-0, hosts 3-2 Brebeuf Jesuit next Friday at Arlington. After losing to Bishop Chatard and New Palestine to begin the season, the Braves have won their last three outings, including a 42-7 victory Saturday against visiting Terre Haute South. Cathedral defeated Brebeuf in 2019, 21-7, and leads the all-time series 15-4.
