Cathedral Lady Irish volleyball went on the road to play in the Early Bird Invitational Tournament hosted by Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, IN this past Saturday, September 7.
Cathedral faced the Providence Pioneers in the first match of the day, taking the first set but dropping the second and third sets (25-18, 15-25, 7-15) resulting in a 1-2 match loss. Anna Neale played strong defense, leading the team with 2 total blocks and her ominous presence at the net, and contributed on offense with an attack that yielded 5 kills on just 11 swings.
Next up was the Fishers Tigers in the second match of the day for Cathedral. After dropping the first set, Cathedral battled back to take the second set but dropped the third set (14-25, 25-20, 10-15) again losing the match 1-2. Jojo Suppiger was outstanding on offense for the Lady Irish with 5 kills on 13 attacks and contributed a strong defensive effort with 3 total blocks.
In the first of two afternoon matches, Cathedral bested the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs in straight sets (28-26, 25-23) to secure the match win 2-0. Sarah Casper led the Lady Irish offense with 12 kills on 26 swings while contributing a team-high 12 digs on defense through a solid back row performance.
The Columbus East Olympians met Cathedral in the final match of the day. The Lady Irish again dropped a first set, had to secure a win in the second set to force a decisive third set, but ultimately lost the match 1-2 (20-25, 25-19, 11-15). Mae Hedrick demonstrated unfaltering sure handedness with 26 assists on 69 ball handling attempts with ZERO errors!!
Cathedral returns home this coming Tuesday, September 10, to face Bishop Chatard in what is sure to be a hard-fought match between two long-time rivals.
