The Cathedral Lady Irish volleyball program went on the road Wednesday, October 2, with a visit to Westfield to face the Lady Shamrocks.
Cathedral started fast against Westfield and staked themselves to a big lead in the first set, but the Shamrocks found their footing, climbed back into the set, and ultimately pinned a set loss on the Irish with a score of 24-26. Irish fortunes did not improve in the second set as the Shamrocks claimed another set win in a runaway 13-25. Cathedral was not going to be run out of the Westfield gym without a fight and claimed a third set win by a comfortable margin of 25-17. The fourth set was tight throughout but the ‘Rocks closed out the match 3-1 with a 19-25 win over the Irish (24-26, 13-25, 25-17, 19-25).
Junior outside hitter Sarah Casper continued in her role of workhorse of the outside attack and delivered 15 kills on 33 attacks with 4 errors, resulting in a .455/.333 kill/hit percentage for the match, and anchored the Irish back row with 30 service receives with only 3 errors.
Junior libero Lucia Corsaro resumed the familiar role and delivered, recording 18 digs and 28 service receives against only 3 errors, and contributed to the offensive effort with 1 ace on 15 serves without fault.
