Cathedral volleyball took its show on the road on Thursday, September 10, as the Irish took a short trip to Lawrence North where all three teams took on the Wildcats.
The Irish attack was in full swing in the first set with Cathedral connecting for 14 kills against just 3 errors. Cathedral further helped its own cause by repelling the Lawrence North attack with 3 blocks and 13 digs in the opening set. Cathedral came out on top 25-22 to stake an early lead in the match. However, the tide turned against the Irish in the second set as their offense scored just 9 kills while committing 11 errors and their defense could not stop the attack by the Wildcats as they scored 11 kills, had 2 aces, and put up 4 blocks on the Irish. Cathedral worked its way to a 15-13 lead midway through set two but stumbled down the stretch to find itself on the losing end of an 18-25 score and all-square with Lawrence North in the match at one set apiece. The Irish started out well in both sets three and four, building early leads in both sets, but each time the Wildcats clawed their way back into the set. Cathedral wound up on the wrong side of identical 21-25 set scores in the final two sets of the match.
On offense the Irish were led by junior Katie Bremer with 11 kills and sophomore Mallory Dills with 31 assists. The back row continues to be anchored by senior Lucia Corsaro who recorded 21 digs and fellow senior Mia Finn who added 10 digs. A bright spot for Cathedral continues to be at the net where the Irish combined for 10 blocks against the Wildcats with junior Katie Bremer accounting for 1 solo and 5 assisted blocks and senior Mia Finn tallying 1 solo and 4 assisted blocks. The loss (25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 21-25) drops the Irish to 3-6 for the season.
The freshman Irish and junior varsity Irish both extended their winning streaks with wins over the Wildcats. The freshman are now 6-1 on the season, while the junior varsity sit at 8-1.
Cathedral hosts Plainfield in the Welch Activity Center on Saturday, September 12 with Freshman at 10am, JV at 11am, and Varsity at 12pm.
