Cathedral volleyball hosted Plainfield in the Welch Activity Center on Saturday, September 12, with all three teams in action. This is the first meeting between these teams since 2012 when the Irish downed the Quakers in straight sets.
Cathedral played even with Plainfield through the middle of the first set, but the Irish stumbled down the stretch and found themselves on the wrong end of a 13-25 score with the Quakers taking set one. The Irish rebounded to square the match at one set apiece with a second set win 25-21 over the Quakers. The two teams fought a back-and-forth affair in the third set and were deadlocked at 14-14 midway through the set. The Quakers used a 5-0 run to pull ahead then traded sideouts with the Irish, resulting in Cathedral dropping set three 19-25 to Plainfield. In the deciding set the Quakers staked themself to a 5 point lead early then rode it out, and the Irish found themselves on the wrong end of an 18-25 set loss, and 1-3 match loss (13-25, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25). The loss drops the Irish to 3-7 on the season.
As a team the Irish connected on 48 kills and had a kill percentage of 0.329 for the match. Leading the Cathedral attack was junior Katie Bremer scoring 15 kills with sophomore Mallory Dills adding 11 kills while pulling double duty by dishing out 25 assists. The Irish totaled 47 assists for the match with junior Kelsey Bailey adding 13 assists to the tally. The back row was again steadied by senior Lucia Corsaro who dug up 20 attacks fired into the Cathedral squad.
In the JV match Cathedral found itself evenly pitted against Plainfield. The JV Irish struck first by taking set one 25-20 but could not put the JV Quakers away in set two and dropped a 21-25 tilt. In the deciding set the Irish downed the Quakers 15-13. The win moves the JV Irish to 9-1 on the season.
The freshman Irish started out the evening in winning fashion but needed three sets to put away the freshman Quakers. After dropping set one 22-25, the Irish regrouped to take set two 25-20 and claim the match with a 15-9 win in set three. The freshman Irish now sit at 7-1 on the season.
Next up for Cathedral is Lawrence Central on Tuesday, September 15. The home match pits the Irish against the Bears with JV action at 5:30PM and Varsity taking the court at 6:30PM.
