This was a team with potential that worked to fulfill it.
Cathedral High School baseball did just that with a solid, consistent 2023 season that ended with a run into the postseason.
“We were really pleased with our body of work throughout the season,” Irish baseball coach Ed Freije said.
The Irish, a traditional city and state power, followed a 2022 state runner-up season with a strong ’23 season in which they went 20-4 in the regular season and finished No. 4 in the final Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class...

This is a team with potential, experience and talent. That makes it a team with a chance.
The Cathedral High School baseball team, a traditional city and state power, turned in a remarkable run to the state championship game in 2022. Irish baseball coach Ed Freije said there is potential for another memorable season in ’23.
But much work must be done to get in that position.
“We like our group,” Freije said. “We know our strengths and what we need to improve on.”

Ed Freije likes the makeup of 2022 Cathedral High School baseball.
The ’22 Irish have the usual expectations, and a familiar approach for what is traditionally one of the best high school baseball programs in Indiana. They also have experience, youth and ability.
“We feel like we’ve got a good mix, a good group,” Freije said.
Freije, in his sixth season as the Irish’s baseball coach, said the team’s strength this season again will be a focus on pitching and defense. That’s a formula that has helped Cathe...

First things first.
“We’re excited to be playing,” Ed Freije said.
While that theme helps define Cathedral High School’s 2021 baseball season, there’s another – very familiar – theme, and that’s this: The Irish want to win – at the highest level.
Freije, entering his fifth season as the Irish’s baseball coach, recently said the Irish are pleased to be playing after losing the 2020 season to COVID-19. But the program’s usual standards of competing to go deep in the postseason remai...

Their numbers were small, but their impact was large.
Ed Freije said that’s part of the story of 2020 Cathedral High School baseball’s senior class, and another part was this: The group will be remembered after a difficult time passes.
“It’s obviously a very challenging time for the players, especially for the seniors,” Freije said.
Irish baseball, like all Indiana high school spring sports, had its 2020 season canceled by regulations addressing Covid-19. All high school Indiana spring sports were canceled in ...

They can pitch and play defense.
Those traits long have defined the Cathedral Irish around Indiana high school baseball, and Ed Freije said that should be the case for a young team in 2019.
The major task for the Irish? Building on those traits throughout the season, something Freije said will be a challenge but also something he said this team can do.
“We’ve got what we’ve got,” Freije, now in his third season as the Irish’s baseball coach, said recently. “We’ve got a good mix of guys. We definite...

It was a season to remember, and few around it will forget.
The 2017 Cathedral baseball team rode an unbeaten run through the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A state playoffs, with a 4-3 victory over Penn in the state title game putting a fitting wrap on a remarkable season.
The Irish won their third state title, their first since 2006.
They finished unbeaten for the first time in program history.
And they did it all in Ed Freije’s first season as head coach, with Freije having taken over the program in the offseason a...
