Boys Soccer captured the City Championship Wednesday Night with a 2-1 victory over Cardinal Ritter. In a re-match of last year's final, the Irish struck early when Noah Gruber got fouled in the goal box, drawing a penalty kick 2:20 into the game. Sean Callaghan stepped up and put the penalty kick away for an early 1-0 lead. That lead stood until halftime as play from both sides was equal throughout. The Irish came out strong in the 2nd Half and gained a 2-0 advantage with 20 minutes left in the game on a spectacular goal by Coledon Johnson. Nathan Schoenfeld sent a ball up top to Callaghan, who headed a one-touch ball to Johnson. Without hesitation, Johnson hit a left-footed volley from 18 yards away that ripped into the net. Cardinal Ritter would score on a well-executed corner kick minutes later, but the stingy Irish defense, and 2-1 lead, held up and the City Champions were crowned!!
