Cathedral lost to Ohio powerhouse Lakewood St. Edward, 39-14, on the road Saturday afternoon in a high school football matchup of schools founded by the Brothers of Holy Cross. The teams combined for nearly 800 yards of total offense, but the Eagles had a more-balanced attack with quarterback Garrett Dzuro throwing for four touchdowns and running back Jordan Castleberry rushing for two more.
Neither team scored in the opening quarter despite Cathedral advancing to the St. Edward ten-yard-line on its first two possessions. The Eagles took a 6-0 lead less than 30 seconds into the second quarter when Dzuro connected with tight end Christopher Elliott on 19-yard scoring pass. The point after kick hit the left upright and was no good.
Cathedral briefly took a 7-6 lead midway through the period when quarterback Orin Edwards threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to tight end Haven Montefalco and Christian Alerding added the extra point kick. Less than a minute later, Dzuro countered with a 55-yard scoring pass to University of Michigan recruit Quintel Kent. Dzuro then added a 10-yard scoring pass to Mackenzie Wainwright in the closing seconds of the quarter to give St. Edward a 19-7 half-time lead.
The Eagles added two second half rushing touchdowns from Castleberry and a Dzuro TD pass to Joseph Formani, while Edwards completed a second scoring pass to Montefalco for the final 25-point margin. The Cathedral loss follows a 38-10 defeat against St. Edward last season in Indianapolis.
Edwards finished the afternoon completing 23-of-36 passes for 304 yards. Montefalco had nine receptions for 153 yards, while receiver Bo Sanders caught seven passes for 92 yards. Chon’Dre Cissel led the Cathedral rushing attack with 65 yards on 13 carries as St. Edward held the Irish to just 81 yards on the ground. Dzuro was efficient in completing 13-of-17 passes for 197 yards, while Castleberry rushed 22 times for 114 yards to lead the Eagles’ offense.
The Fighting Irish fall to 4-4 on the season, while Lakewood St. Edward improves its record to 4-2. Cathedral concludes the regular season next Friday at Center Grove. The 5-3 Trojans are riding a three-game winning streak following a 38-17 victory at Lawrence North Friday.
The Irish defeated Center Grove 21-14 last season at Arsenal Tech to even the all-time series at three wins for each school. The last five games between the Irish and Trojans have been decided by a touchdown or less.
