The Boys Soccer Season came to an end on Saturday night, when #1 ranked Zionsville defeated the Irish 3-0 in the Regional Final. In a rematch of their regular-season match up, in which Zionsville scored in the last 28 seconds of regulation to win 1-0, the highly anticipated dual didn't quite live up to its hype. The Irish just couldn't seem to get on track and Zionsville controlled possession throughout. A Zionsville goal off a direct kick put them up 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the first half, and proved to be all the scoring Zionsville would need. Two 2nd half Zionsville goals put the game out of reach and ended a great season for the Irish.
The Irish had advanced to the Regional Final with a 3-1 win earlier in the day against Brownsburg. The Irish were firing on all cylinders as Jacob Schneider scored 2 first-half goals and Noah Gruber ended the scoring with a free kick bomb that found the net midway through the 2nd half. Brownsburg fought back to score a late goal, but the result had ultimately already been decided.
The Irish finished their season with a 13-6-1 record and advanced to the Regional Final for the first time since 2012. The 15 seniors on this roster showed great leadership and set the table for success next year and beyond. A balanced scoring attack (Coledon Johnson 8G, 8A; Sean Callaghan 7G, 4A; Jacob Schneider 6G, 4A and Matt Welch 5G, 3A) paved the way and a stingy defense, led by Nik Kolosso's 8 shutouts and only 14 goals allowed all year, proved to be a winning formula.
