The Cathedral Baseball team kicks off their season with a home game against the Noblesville Millers on Monday, March 25. The Irish will play 25 regular season games before playoffs begin in late May. Head Coach Ed Freije, '99, has high hopes of picking the season up where he left it last year.
The Irish finished the 2018 season with a 23-9-1 record after losing in the state finals to Fishers High School, 4-3. Coach Freije led his team to back-to-back state final appearances, winning the state championship in 2017.
"We have about half of last year's program returning this year and are looking to begin the season where we left off," Freije said.
The Irish are no stranger to success; the team has won three state championships and has made five additional appearances to the finals in the past 20 years. Throughout Freije’s reign and beyond, the Cathedral Baseball program has been traditionally strong and sound.
The team is led by 10 seniors. Last May, four seniors graduated from Cathedral High School and chose to continue their playing career at the collegiate level. Several seniors from the 2019 class have committed to play baseball at the collegiate level as well.
The Irish team is composed of large senior and sophomore classes for the 2019 season. This is Ed Freije and the coaching staff’s third year leading the team.
This year, new faces will get the chance to make their mark on Irish baseball history. All home games are played at Cathedral High School's Brunette Park. Come out and support the State 4A Runner-up Irish this season!
