All three Irish volleyball teams were in action on Tuesday, September 7, and came away with victories over the Trojans on their home court.
The freshman Irish defeated the freshman Trojans in straight sets 25-16, 25-21 in the auxiliary gym. The win marks the second straight victory for the freshman Cathedral Irish over a Catholic school rival as the team defeated the freshman Roncalli Red Devils easily on Senior Night one week earlier by a 25-12, 25-16 tally. The two wins move the freshman Irish overall record to 5-1 on the season.
The JV Irish also were victorious over the JV Trojans on the main court but needed three sets to get the job done. After dropping the first set Cathedral regrouped to take sets two and three and win the match by scores of 20-25, 25-16, 15-11. The win pushes the JV Irish season record to 7-1.
In the Varsity match, head coach Mary Ording Hemer made adjustments to shore up the Irish lineup after losing six-rotation senior Sarah Casper to a season-ending ACL tear in practice just one day before the match against the Trojans. On offense junior Katie Bremer stepped up with her best match of the season, connecting on 13 kills, while senior Mia Finn added 8 kills. Sure-handed sophomore Mallory Dills dished out 17 assists while junior Kelsey Bailey tossed up 12 assists, between them accounting for 29 of the 34 Irish assists. On defense senior Lucia Corsaro recorded 15 digs and the Irish stuffed the Chatard attack with 7 total blocks, 4 each by junior Katie Bremer and sophomore Caiti Barthel. The straight set match win (25-16, 25-18, 28-26) improves the Irish record to 3-5 on the season.
Cathedral goes on the road to Lawrence North on Thursday, September 10. All three Irish teams will face the Wildcats with Freshman and JV taking the court at 5:30PM and Varsity starting at 7PM.
