Cathedral volleyball went on the road Tuesday, September 29, to Carmel. The Freshman and Varsity Irish squads were both in action against the Greyhounds.
In the Varsity match the Irish played neck-and-neck with the Greyhounds down the stretch in set one - - neither team could get ahead by more than 1 point from 17-17 through 26-26. The Irish fought valiantly but dropped the set 26-28 to the Greyhounds. In the second and third sets, Cathedral again played Carmel tough only to find themselves on the wrong end of 18-25 and 14-25 set scores. The match loss (26-28, 18-25, 14-25) has the Irish sitting at 7-10 on the season.
A positive note for the Irish was senior Lucia Corsaro recording 12 digs for the match which pushed her career dig tally over the 1000 mark. Congratulations, Lucia!! Also of note for the Irish were junior Mallory Dills who dished out 13 assists and senior Mia Finn who knocked down 6 kills. The Irish tallied 6 service aces for the match with junior Maria Robles and junior Kelsey Bailey dropping in 2 apiece.
The first match of the evening pitted the Freshman Irish against their Greyhound counterparts. The Freshman brought home the win but needed three sets to get the job done. Cathedral opened the match with a 25-14 win in set one but dropped set two 21-25 to Carmel. The deciding set three was all Irish as they pulled away for the 15-7 win to secure the victory over the Greyhounds. The decisive win (25-14, 21-25, 15-7) has the Freshman Irish at 10-1 on the season.
Cathedral returns home on Wednesday, September 30, with all three teams in action. The Varsity and JV teams take on Westfield in the Welch Activity Center, while the Freshman face Brebeuf in the MIMMS. First matches begin at 5:30PM with the Varsity immediately following at 7:00PM.
