The Cathedral Fighting Irish volleyball team hosted the Carmel Greyhounds on Senior Night at the Welch Activity Center on Tuesday, October 1.
The evening began as the Cathedral faithful recognized and honored six Senior volleyball players and their parents for their commitment and dedication to Cathedral Lady Irish volleyball. Seniors Mia Dittoe, Jami Hansen, Mae Hedrick, Anna Neale, Jojo Suppiger, and Anna Trieloff were escorted by their parents onto the court as their memories of Cathedral Volleyball and future plans were shared.
The first set was a neck-and-neck, down-to-the-wire affair with Cathedral pulling out the win 26-24. Carmel rebounded in the second set to even the match at one set apiece by winning 21-25. The Lady Irish took control of the match with a 25-17 win in the third set and closed out the Lady Greyhounds in the fourth set 25-17 to take the match 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17).
Seniors Mia Dittoe (11 kills), Jojo Suppiger (6 kills), Anna Trieloff (5 kills), and Anna Neale (4 kills) led the Lady Irish offense on Senior Night. These four attackers combined for 26 kills on 65 attacks for a .400 kill percentage and .231 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Mae Hedrick inserted her deft touch into the Lady Irish attack by doling out 18 assists on 50 ball handling attempts with zero errors and contributed her defensive prowess to the team effort with 4 digs and 1 serve receive.
Senior Jami Hansen, in the role of libero on Senior Night, accounted for nearly 1/3 of the digs for the match with 15 and added 14 serve receives with no errors and establish a defensive advantage for Cathedral throughout the match.
Following the match, and in keeping with Lady Irish Volleyball tradition, every player gathered with the Seniors to look back fondly on their Cathedral Volleyball career and watch as the Seniors opened their Senior gift baskets.
The Lady Irish are in action tomorrow night, October 2, when they travel to Westfield to take on the Lady Shamrocks.
