The future is bright for Cathedral High School boys track and field.
What made the 2023 season memorable is that the present was bright, too – and that made for a successful season for the Irish.
It was a season of improvement, development and performance.

The program remains strong.
As important as that is to John O’Hara and Cathedral High School boys track and field, it doesn’t change the difficult nature of not completing the 2020 season. That still hurt.
And it was still disappointing.
“They set some pretty cool and high goals that unfortunately they weren’t able to see out,” O’Hara, Cathedral’s track and field coach, said of the ‘20 Irish boys track season.

Track and Field Head Coach John O'Hara '02 was nominated for 2019 Indiana Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. All nominees will be recognized at the IATCCC Annual Meeting on Friday, February 7, 2020. The winner will be announced at that time.

Cole Hocker '19 was named the 2018-19 Gatorade Indiana Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year! Hocker won the 1600m and 800m IHSAA State Championships. Hocker will run at Oregon in the fall.

Congratulations to Nick Hruskoci '20, Garrett Stewart '20, RJ O’Neal, and Cole Hocker '19 on winning the DMR National Championship! They are the first Indiana team to finish under 10 minutes.
Hruskoci ran the 1,200 meters in 3:04.97, Garrett Stewart 400 in 50.30, Rodney O’Neal 800 in 1:54.73 and Cole Hocker 1,600 in 4:08.93.

Cole Hocker added two state championships to his trophy case, winning the 1600m and 800m. Hocker previously won the IHSAA cross country championship in the fall. Overall the boys track & field team finished 4th in the state meet. The 4th place finish is the best finish for Cathedral since 1998.

Cole Hocker '19 was named the 2019 City Athlete of the Year. Congratulations Cole!

Hocker is a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track and made his mark in both sports. In cross country, Hocker was a three-time city champion, a sectional and regional champion twice and was the state runner-up as a junior. As a senior, he won the individual state title by 16 seconds. The boys track team won their 3rd straight city championship, winning 9 events overall. The meet was highlighted by Cole Hocker '19 setting the city record for the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 50.64 seconds. The previous record was 1:53.20 by Chris Buhler in 1075. Hocker's time was also the second fastest in the nation.
The Irish won with a score of 174 points from nine event wins.
