Cathedral volleyball honored five seniors on Tuesday, September 1, as the Lady Irish hosted the rebranded Roncalli Red Devils in the Welch Activity Center. Senior players Sarah Casper, Lucia Corsaro, and Mia Finn and senior managers Kimmie Mattingly and Gabe Keltner were recognized prior to the match.
The Irish came out swinging and were never threatened on their way to a first set win 25-17. The Irish were on the verge of staking themselves to a two-set lead, but the Red Devils stormed back to even the match by stealing the second set 25-27. Cathedral fell 19-25 to Roncalli in the third set as the Irish could not regain the upper edge in the match. Cathedral fell behind early in the fourth set before storming back to take a 16-14 lead, trying valiantly to force a deciding set, but Roncalli ultimately prevailed as the Irish fell 23-25 in the final set of the evening. Cathedral is now 2-4 on the season following the loss (25-17, 25-27, 19-25, 23-25).
As would be expected on Senior Night, and against one of their main rivals, the three Irish senior tri-captains stepped up big against the Red Devils. Sarah Casper landed 15 kills, Lucia Corsaro recorded 28 digs, and Mia Finn scored 10 kills against a talented Red Devil squad. After Cathedral, Sarah Casper plans to pursue a career in the medical field and plans to attend Notre Dame. Lucia Corsaro plans to pursue a career in physical therapy and athletic training and will attend Xavier and play volleyball. Mia Finn plans to pursue a career in nursing to work with kids and plans to attend Kentucky or Tennessee. Kimmie Mattingly plans to study to become a genetic counselor and plans to attend IUPUI. Gabe Keltner plans to study to become a dentist and plans to attend Indiana.
The Irish go on the road to battle the Trojans in the New Castle Fieldhouse on Thursday, September 3. The JV match begins at 6PM immediately followed by the Varsity match at 7PM.
