Cathedral’s high academics and athletic standards do not stop with the students, Cathedral holds those same high standards to the medical well being and fitness staff at Cathedral. In conjunction with Community Health Network, Cathedral provides many medical services to our student athletes. Mike Hunkeris in his 29th year as Certified Athletic Trainer at Cathedral High School. He is responsible for providing health care services to all Cathedral athletes. Mike holds Bachelor and Masters degrees from Indiana University in Athletic Training. He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association, is an ImPACT trained Athletic Trainer, and American Heart Association CPR/AED instructor. Mike and his wife Patti, have two sons, Will (class of 2012) and Clay (class of 2016). The Hunkers are members of St. Louis DeMontfort and reside in Fishers.
Abbey Davis is in her second year as a Certified Athletic Trainer for Cathedral High School. She was born in Fort Wayne and attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne. Abbey graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2010 from Ball State University. This is her fifth year in Indianapolis having worked at the University of Indianapolis and Lebanon high schools. Before making her move to Indianapolis, Abbey worked as an athletic trainer at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Fort Wayne for two years working with Norwell and Homestead high schools. Prior to that position, she was an athletic trainer at AthletiCo Physical Therapy in the Chicagoland area for two years working with Marmion Academy and Maine South High schools. Abbey is employed by Community Health Network and is very excited to start her journey with the Irish! Abbey is also married with a one and a half year old daughter and they reside in Fishers.
Rodney Benner, MD, is in his 1st year as Team Physician for Cathedral High School. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, competed his orthopedic residency at University of Tennessee – Memphis/Campbell Clinic, and fellowship in knee surgery-adult reconstruction-sports medicine at the Insall Scott Kelly Institute. Dr. Benner is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of knee injuries, and he practices at the Shelbourne Knee Center. He also serves as Team Physician for Purdue University and Wabash College.
Fitness Staff Cody Johnson serves Cathedral as the head strength and conditioning coach and as an off-site coach with IU Health Sports Performance. He is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Level I Sports Performance Coach with the United States Weightlifting Association (USAW). Cody’s prior experiences in the field of athletic development include time spent as a volunteer assistant at the University of Indianapolis assisting fellow IUHSP employee, Steve Barrick. In addition, he has also worked at Center Grove High School as a strength and conditioning intern, and with Velocity Sports Performance in the same role.
