Class 5A top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral jumped out to a 25-0 lead Friday night on its way to a 39-20 high school football victory at Class 3A number-one Bishop Chatard. With the win, the Fighting Irish retain possession of the Northside K of C traveling trophy and improve their record to 4-0 for the first time since 2016.
Cathedral moved the opening kickoff 76 yards in seven plays, ending the drive with Nathan McCahill flipping the ball to Cam Jordan for a 3-yard touchdown pass. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, Ian Neberz recovered a Trojan fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Chatard 31-yard line. Nine plays later, Jake Langdon's 1-yard touchdown made the score 12-0.
Ben Gomez followed a Langdon 2-yard second-quarter scoring run by kicking field goals of 23 and 31 yards, giving the Irish a 25-0 lead. Chatard’s Carter St. John completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Coleman with 1:01 to play in the first half to close the gap to 25-7 at the intermission.
The two teams traded scores in the third quarter with McCahill giving the Irish a 32-7 lead on a 12-yard run, only to have the Trojans’ Tommy Hannon answer with a one-yard rushing TD. McCahill’s 4-yard scoring pass to Jordan increased the lead to 39-13 later in the quarter. In the final period, St. John connected with Brady Kinnett on a 10-yard touchdown pass to conclude the scoring.
McCahill completed 26 of 39 passes for 359 yards. Jordan caught eight passes for 75 yards, while Michael Page had six receptions for 86 yards. Langdon ran 22 times for 133 yards. It was his third straight 100+ yard rushing effort.
Cathedral gained more than 500 yards on offense for the third consecutive game with 541 against the Trojans. The Irish defense held Chatard to just 66 yards rushing and intercepted St. John twice. Cathedral now leads the all-time series with the Trojans 27-19.
The Fighting Irish host Cincinnati St. Xavier next Friday at Arlington. The Bombers enter the game with a 2-1 record after a come-from-behind, 38-24, conference victory Friday at rival Elder high school. The Bombers trailed 24-17 in the fourth quarter, but scored three touchdowns in the final nine minutes to win. Cathedral trails the all-time series against St. X 17-2.
