Cathedral Volleyball Cages the Cougars
In the second match of the Three Way Meet at Noblesville on Saturday, September 19, Cathedral Varsity and JV volleyball teams squared up against the Cougars of Greenfield-Central.
Cathedral quickly established the upper hand as the Irish built and held a lead throughout set one, but Greenfield-Central fought back to knot the score at 20-20. The Irish were on the verge of dropping the opening set as they found themselves on the bottom side of a 23-24 score but stormed back with two kills and a service ace to take the set 26-24 over the Cougars. Set two was all Greenfield-Central until Cathedral fought back to get close at 15-17, but the Irish faltered down the stretch by giving up an 0-8 run to drop the set 15-25 to the Cougars. With the match knotted at one set apiece, the Irish settled into a rhythm and took set three 25-23 then closed out the match with a set four win by the same 25-23 score. The 3-1 match win (26-24, 15-25, 25-23, 25-23) puts the Irish all square at 7-7 on the season.
Building on the momentum from their victory over Noblesville in the first match of the day, senior Lucia Corsaro anchored the defense with 21 digs, fellow senior Mia Finn added 15 digs, and sophomore Mallory Dills recorded 13 digs. The Irish were a force at the net rejecting the Cougar attack, putting up 9 total blocks with Mia Finn accounting for 2 solo blocks and 4 assisted blocks. On offense junior Katie Bremer struck for 14 kills on 35 attacks, resulting in a .400 kill percentage, while fellow junior Kelsey Bailey dished out 22 assists. As a team Cathedral dropped in 10 service aces against Greenfield-Central, just shy of their tally of 12 service aces delivered in the first match against Noblesville.
The JV Irish were again in simultaneous action against the JV Cougars in the fieldhouse and notched a second match win on the day. Cathedral won in straight sets over Greenfield-Central and in the process pushed their season tally to an impressive 13-1.
