The Lady Irish hosted the Yorktown Tigers and celebrated Alumni Family & Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night in the Welch Activity Center on Thursday, September 26. A gym packed full of former players and their families, past and present Cathedral faculty and staff, and legions of faithful volleyball fans saw the Lady Irish battle hard but ultimately fall to the #2 ranked Lady Tigers in four sets (14-25, 12-25, 25-20, 19-25).
Yorktown, who did not lose a set over the entire 2018 campaign en route to an unblemished 34-0 record and the 4A State Championship crown, proved to be a formidable opponent and took immediate control of the match by winning the first two sets. Cathedral battled back to take set three and breathe life into the hopes of the Lady Irish faithful for an upset. Yorktown quickly righted the ship in the fourth set and, despite a spirited challenged by a resurgent Cathedral squad, cruised to the match win by securing the set.
Defensively the Lady Irish were led by the dependable duo of Lucia Corsaro and Jami Hansen with 15 and 7 digs, respectively, propping up the back row. On offense Cathedral was anchored by the triple threat of outside pin hitters Mia Dittoe and Sarah Casper and inside middle hitter Anna Trieloff who combined for 37 of the 44 Lady Irish kills.
Another bright spot on the night for the Lady Irish was the steady play of Senior setter Mae Hedrick who delivered her 1000th career assist during the match. Way to go, Mae!!.
Cathedral volleyball hosts the Lady Irish Invitational this Saturday, September 28, and faces perennial powers Avon, Center Grove, Columbus East, New Albany, New Castle, Penn, and Perry Meridian.
