Cathedral volleyball traveled to New Castle on Thursday, September 3, where the Irish squared up against the Trojans in the New Castle Fieldhouse.
Cathedral faced New Castle in only their second outing of the season. The Trojans were certainly well-rested and quickly showed why they are a three-time defending state champion. The Irish dropped the match in three sets to settle in at 2-5 on the season, finding themselves on the wrong side of 15-25, 17-25, and 12-25 set scores.
For the match, junior Caiti Barthel led the Irish on offense with 8 kills while junior Katie Bremer connected on 6 kills. Combining for 21 of 23 total Irish assists were sophomore Mallory Dills with 13 and junior Kelsey Bailey with 8. On defense, senior Lucia Corsaro was her steady self in the back row, recording 16 digs, with junior Caroline Kubcaki and senior Sarah Casper contributing 9 and 8 digs, respectively. At the net, the Irish totaled 6 blocks, with senior Mia Finn accounting for 1 solo and 2 assisted blocks while freshman Taylor Lewis stood tall with 2 solo and 1 assisted blocks.
The first match of the evening saw the JV Irish easily defeat the JV Trojans in two sets (25-12, 25-13). Coupled with their dramatic three-set win versus JV Roncalli (25-24, 16-25, 16-14) earlier in the week on Senior Night, the win moves the JV Irish to 6-1 on the season.
Cathedral goes on the road to Chatard on Tuesday, September 8. All three teams will be in action against their main rival with Freshman and JV taking the court at 5:30PM and Varsity starting at 7PM.
