Cathedral volleyball was in action against Perry Meridian on Thursday, September 17, with all three Irish teams taking on the Falcons. It was an exciting evening in the WAC and MIMMS with all three matches going the maximum number of sets.
In the Varsity match, the Lady Irish jumped out quickly on the Lady Falcons in the first set and never trailed on their way to an impressive 25-11 win. The second set saw the Falcons score first and maintain a lead until the Irish knotted the score at 21-21, but Perry Meridian pulled square in the match as Cathedral dropped the set 22-25. The third set was back and forth with the teams trading places in front - - but never by more than 2 points - - and the Irish were poised to take the set after moving ahead 18-14. However, the Irish fell victim to a 0-6 run by the Falcons and ultimately dropped the set, again by a 22-25 score. Cathedral needed a win in the fourth set to stay alive in the match and never trailed on their way to a 25-19 win. In the deciding fifth set the Falcons built an early 1-4 lead, but after a timeout by head coach Mary Ording Hemer steeled their resolve the Irish used a 4-0 run of their own to take the lead 5-4. Cathedral forged an 11-9 lead late and were in position to take the set, but the Falcons fought back and put the Irish on the brink of a match loss by moving to set point at 13-14. The Lady Irish needed no help to tap into their own resiliency and scored the final three points of the set to win 16-14.
The Irish played well throughout the match on both sides of the net and were in contention the entire night. On defense senior Lucia Corsaro set the standard with 38 digs, while sophomore Mallory Dills added 15, junior Carol Kubacki managed 13, and senior Mia Finn recorded 12. On offense junior Katie Bremer connected on 22 kills, sophomore Caiti Barthel pushed through 19, and senior Mia Finn scored 8. In the assist department sophomore Mallory Dills handed out 30 and junior Kelsey Bailey dished out 24. Additionally, the Irish combined for 16 aces and 5 total blocks over the course of the match. The Irish clipped the wings of the Falcons to move to 5-7 on the season with the hard-fought match victory (25-11, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14).
In the JV match, the Irish were locked in a battle of their own as they found themselves in a tough match with the Falcons. Perry Meridian took the first set in a back-and-forth affair, but Cathedral bounced back to take sets two and three on their way to the match win. The JV Irish are now 11-1 on the season with the victory (15-25, 25-23, 15-13).
In the Freshman match, the Irish likewise had their hands full with their Falcon counterparts. After dropping set one Cathedral came back to take the final two sets to claim victory. The Freshman Irish now stand at 9-1 after their come from behind match win (22-25, 25-13, 15-11).
Next up for Cathedral is a double-header against Noblesville and Greenfield-Central at Noblesville High School on Saturday, September 19. Both the Varsity and JV will be in action as the Irish square up against the Millers at 9:30am, and then immediately after take on the Cougars at 11:30am.
