Cathedral Varsity and JV volleyball teams travelled to Noblesville High School on Saturday, September 19, to square off against two opponents in full matches in a single-day format that mimics tournament action. The Irish faced the Millers of Noblesville and the Cougars of Greenfield-Central as the season moves closer to IHSAA Sectional Tournament play.
In the first match of the day, the Irish were slow out of the gate in the first set and suffered a loss 13-25 to the Millers. After wiping the sleep out of their eyes, Cathedral came to life in the second set and connected on 11 kills with only 2 hitting errors and pulled themselves even in the match with a 25-14 win. The third and fourth sets followed the same pattern of a positive net kills-minus-errors attack, and the back row stepped up big with 20 digs and 13 digs in the third and fourth sets, respectively. The effort paid off as the Irish closed out the match by downing the Millers 25-18 and 25-13 in the final two sets. The 3-1 match win (13-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-13) moves the Irish to 6-7 on the season.
The seniors stepped up big to will the Irish to the match win. On offense senior Mia Finn lead the Cathedral attack with 10 kills on just 18 swings, yielding a .555 kill percentage and .388 hitting percentage for the match. Fellow senior Lucia Corsaro lifted Cathedral on defense with 17 digs, with 12 of those coming in the final two sets, and on offense by dropping in 7 service aces.
The JV Irish were in simultaneous action against the JV Millers in the fieldhouse and came away victorious as well. After dropping the first set, Cathedral righted the ship and won sets two and three. The 2-1 match victory improves the JV Irish record to 12-1 on the year.
