Expectations for Cathedral High School football are lofty. As expected.
But while Irish Head Coach Bill Peebles understands this, and while Peebles said Cathedral football should be strong in 2022, he said something else is also true:
Improvements must be made to meet expectations. And a lot of work must be done.

This was memorable, impressive and thrilling.
And while back-to-back state titles are always special, and while the Cathedral High School 2021 football team will be remembered as one of the best in the history of a historical program, Head Coach Bill Peebles said something else was equally true.
This took a season-long effort by all involved.

Top-rated Indianapolis Cathedral won the 14th high school football tournament state championship in school history Friday night, defeating Zionsville, 34-14, in the Class 5-A title game at Lucas Oil Stadium. It’s the second consecutive year that the Fighting Irish downed the Eagles in the finals, winning 46-28 in 2020.

Following Cathedral's 14th IHSAA football state championship victory on Friday night, Irish senior offensive lineman Cooper Koers was awarded the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award in Class 5A Football. Koers becomes the 9th Cathedral player honored with the award.

Reigning Class 5-A state champion Indianapolis Cathedral defeated New Albany Friday night, 52-13, at Arsenal Tech’s Howard Longshore Stadium to win its 15th high school football semi-state championship. The Fighting Irish will now make a state-record 17th finals appearance next Friday at 7:00 pm in a rematch of last season’s championship game against Zionsville.

Reigning Class 5-A state champion Indianapolis Cathedral won its 20h high school football regional title Friday night with a 23-7 victory over New Palestine at Arsenal Tech’s Howard Longshore Stadium. Class 5-A top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral won its 25th high school football sectional championship Friday night with a hard fought 31-7 road victory over second-rated Decatur Central. Reigning Class 5-A state champion Indianapolis Cathedral opened the 49th annual IHSAA football state tournament Friday night with a 56-0 win over Terre Haute North at Arlington Middle School. Nationally-ranked Center Grove handed Indianapolis Cathedral its first loss of the season Friday night, 21-6, at rain-soaked Arlington Middle School in a matchup of the top-rated teams in Indiana’s largest two high school football classes. Indianapolis Cathedral improved its record to 8-0 in high school football Friday night with a 45-21 victory at Brebeuf Jesuit. The Class 5-A top-ranked Fighting Irish will host Class 6-A number-one Center Grove next Friday at Arlington. The Indiana High School Athletic Association has drawn the pairings for its 49th Annual Football State Tournament. Cathedral will host Terre Haute North in the first round of post-season play in Class 5-A Sectional 13 on October 22.
Cathedral has a 4-2 all-time record against the Patriots including a 42-20 victory in their last meeting, which came in the 2013 5-A semi-state at Arsenal Tech. It is the only previous tournament game between the two schools.

Indianapolis Cathedral defeated Cincinnati La Salle on the road Friday night, 35-7, in a high school football clash of highly ranked teams. The Fighting Irish are ranked first in Indiana’s Class 5-A, while the Lancers were rated fifth in Division II, which is the second largest class in Ohio.

At halftime of the Cathedral football game, the Irish honored the state champion and runner-ups anniversary teams. The 1976 and 1991 football teams were honored for their second place finish.
The state champion teams from 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2011 received recognition for their excellence.

Indianapolis Cathedral overwhelmed Hammond Morton in a homecoming high school football game Friday night at Arlington. The Class 5-A top-rated Fighting Irish scored 37 points in the first 15 minutes on their way to a 51-0 victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
