Marc Behringer hardly could have been more pleased.
Cathedral High School girls soccer in 2022 moved up in competition – and difficulty – and turned in a remarkable season with a deep run in the state tournament.
The Irish also stayed true to program values and approach, finishing among state’s top eight teams by overcoming adversity and playing solid defense with an opportunistic offense – and by playing with heart and desire. All of that mattered. A lot.
“Sport is about developing human beings, and this group show...

This was one to remember, and one to savor.
Cathedral High School girls soccer in 2021 turned in one of their better seasons in recent memory while not quite reaching the Irish’s lofty postseason goals.
And they continued building on their status as one of Indiana’s top girls soccer programs.
“The coaches were really just very pleased with how the season went,” Marc Behringer said.
Behringer, Irish girls soccer coach for two-and-a-half decades, called the ’21 season one of the program’s “easiest&rdquo...

This is a different kind of season for Cathedral High School girls soccer.
Perennially one of Indiana’s top programs, a normal Irish girls soccer season means a veteran team of senior leaders and hard-earned postseason experience.
The difference in 2021? The Irish are young – but according to head coach Marc Behringer, what remains constant is the Irish are very talented, and therefore optimistic that the season can end with a deep run in the state tournament.
“The coaching staff really does feel like this team is pretty good,&...

This was a season no one who witnessed it will forget.
Cathedral High School girls soccer achieved nearly all it could possibly achieve in 2020, doing so while overcoming adversity. That made it one of the most memorable and successful seasons in program history.
Missing the state title by the narrowest of margins didn’t change that.
“They deserved to have a championship at the end, but that’s not what was to be,” Irish girls soccer coach Marc Behringer said. “The girls just did an incredible job this year. No other...

New season, usual approach.
And while COVID-19 means playing the 2020 season in unusual circumstances, Cathedral High School girls soccer coach Marc Behringer is confident the program’s approach can continue to work.
The ’20 Irish are capable of a postseason push – and of accomplishing their season goal of “Taking Back the ‘Ship.” Behringer said they’ll just need to continue developing and working.
“That’s what we do,” Behringer said in early September.
What the Irish also do is annu...

The 2019 Cathedral High School girls soccer regular season hasn’t been close to easy.
But as Irish coach Marc Behringer sees it, the rough road of a difficult schedule could mean being able to better navigate the postseason path.
And around Irish soccer, that’s whole idea.
“We’ve played such a difficult schedule that it exposes all of the things we need to work on,” Behringer said as the Irish prepared for a 2019 postseason that will begin with the City Tournament at Bishop Chatard High School the week of September ...

INDIANAPOLIS – It happens every year: A team wins a state title, and the expectation — both internally and externally — is success will continue. That's the situation Cathedral's girls soccer team found itself in after winning the Class 2A title last October .
And yet, even after a 1-0 win over 2A No. 1 Brebeuf Jesuit on Wednesday night, the Irish are 3-4-2 this season. If you're just looking at records, that doesn't scream state title contender. Cathedral coach Marc ...

All season long, Marc Behringer preached to his team the importance of “being ready to play from the outset.”
So he was thrilled when his girls’ soccer team of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis scored the first goal just 93 seconds into the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A championship match on Oct. 27.
“The first thing I did was stop and look up at the heavens and say, ‘Thank you,’ ” Behringer recalls.
Being a coach, Behringer then immediately focused on the second thing tha...

Whatever the outcome, it would have been special.
That the outcome of the 2018 Cathedral High School girls soccer season was the program’s third state title made it all the more so.
“The year, the season, was just really enjoyable,” Irish girls soccer coach Mark Behringer said. “The girls did what we asked them to do. We built an identity through the season and everything just fell into place.”
The Irish, a year after a bitter sectional-final loss to Bishop Chatard, fulfilled what they early on set as their seasonal...

The Lady Irish Soccer team defeated South Bend St. Joseph 1-0 to win the state championship! The 2018 title is the third in program history.
Maddie Wirth scored the deciding goal 93 seconds into the game and the Irish played lock down defense the rest of the way. Senior goal keeper Sophia Saucernman stopped 22 St Joseph attacks as she recorded her seventh shutout this season.
Head coach Marc Behringer told the Indy Star "Sophia has done that all year long. We gave up two goals the entire tournament and one was on a p...
